Upper Elementary Lesson: The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau

When I was a kid, Jacques Cousteau was a household name (thanks in large part to PBS). On top of being an educator of undersea life, he was an advocate for keeping our oceans clean of pollution and trash. As such, The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau - with its somewhat abstract illustrations - is a wonderful foundation for lessons around pollution, Earth Day, and/or the ocean. I think it’s also a lovely book/lesson plan to use for art classes, as the illustrations showcase (at least to me) a slightly “Matisse style” of art (e.g. collage, layering, abstract).
